Captains Trophy

After postponement in August due to heavy rain, the Captains Trophy was re-scheduled and hosted at Huddersfield G.C at Fixby Hall in October. Fixby Hall is an impressive venue , from the long drive way to the fabulous hall and fantastic course layout. The staff and members were all very helpful and welcoming, making it an enjoyable day. The course is well presented and offers a good test of golf, our winner was the only golfer under par. This years winner was Cliff Barrett (net 70) 2nd place was Steve Newton, with 3rd and 4th going to Joey Byrne and Garry Baldwin. Thanks to Graham Stroud for donating a nearest pin prize (also picked up by Cliff) On behalf of our Captain, thanks to all for supporting and congratulations to Cliff.

Newcastle Trip

This year a change of venue was decided on for our season ending trip and we visited the North East We based ourselves at the Copthorne Hotel in Newcastle, a great venue located under the bridges on the banks of the Tyne. We were made very welcome and had a fantastic meal on presentation night. Thanks to all the staff who made our stay a pleasure. The courses were new to all of us and we found each of them to be great layouts, well presented and maintained and are highly recommended. Congratulations to all the winners, especially Steve and Joey on their success in the Nobby Trophy. Thanks to all the members and guests who made the trip, we now look forward to returning next year. Get your names down early !!!

Ex Captains Niblick

Warrington Golf Club played host to this years ExCaptains Niblick. The weather was a bit miserable for most of the round but the course was in fantastic condition. It's a good, well presented layout and gives a reasonable test of golf. The staff as usual at most good clubs, were very professional and pleasant. The winner was Norman Morris on CPO with a return of 39pts with Alan Mayoh in second place. In third place, also on CPO with 38pts was Garry Baldwin pushing Peter Killcommon into fourth. The golf was followed by evening meal and presentation, with our captain Kevin, treating us to one of his more lengthy speaches. A great club, worthy of a return visit.

Don Hayes Trophy

Cleckheaton Golf Club provided 'A Grand Day Out' as Wallace would say to Grommit. The Course was in excellent condition and the weather was kind. Good Butties on arrival with proper Yorkshire bacon. Winner on the day was Mr Patrick McGarry with a handicap shaking 36 points followed by Alan Garside with 34 points. Third place was keenly contested on 31 points by Messrs Kilcommons and Hauxwell with a card playoff favouring Peter. Alan Garside kindly donated a prize for nearest the pin on hole 17, won by our illustrious Treasurer President Steve Newton who was the only player to actually hit the green! A friendly drinks session on the patio, followed by a two course dinner was rounded off by the usual memorable remarks by our Captain, Kevin and the prize giving.

Runner up Alan Mayho 30pts
Third Frank Hauxwell 29pts
Fourth Norman Morris 29pts

Spring Stableford
This year Reddish Vale was the venue for our first meeting of the year, the spring comp. The wet weather from previous days disappeared and golf was played in good conditions. We received a very friendly welcome from staff and members, who offered helpful course advice whilst we tucked into bacon sandwiches and recovery advice prior to a wonderful evening meal. The word Vale in the club name and the description of the views, hint at the hilly nature of the course ahead, from the first tee through to the formidable 18th.As scoring proves it's a tough test. The course itself was in excellent condition and exceptionally presented. The competition was won by Keith Liddle with 32pts,continuing on from his success at last years captains trophy. In a repeat of last year, runner up was Alan Mayho 30pts.In 3rd and 4th place on 29pts were Frank Hauxwell and Norman Morris with Dave Parkinson missing out on CPO. Well done Keith and thanks to those members who supported the event.

Fourth - Peter Killcommon 38pts

The Ex Captains Niblick was played in the Cheshire countryside at Antrobus golf club. Yet again we had glorious sunshine for the day, unfortunately this brought out the horseflies which, along with some quirky holes made for an interesting days golf. Our high handicap members seemed to enjoy the day with some very high scoring. Taking home the Niblick this year, was Pat McGarry with 43pts,in second place was Barry Wilson on 42pts putting Dave Parkinson into third on CPO. Fourth place went to Peter Killcommon with 38pts. Congratulations again to Pat and thanks to staff at Antrobus for hosting a very enjoyable day.

Don Hayes Trophy

Leigh Golf Club was the chosen venue for this years Don Hayes Trophy. The golfing gods smiled on us again as we had glorious sunshine, combined with another excellent, well presented course ensuring another tremendous golf day out. The golf was complemented by a great meal and service in elegant clubhouse surroundings. The competition was won by Alex Reynolds with a handicap busting 41pts, his first ever competition win.In second place was the serial prize winner Alan Garside with 39pts. A 34pt card playoff saw Keith Liddle claim 3rd from Dave Parkinson and the unfortunate Gareth Morris just missing out. Thanks to all who supported the event and congratulations to Alex on a great win

Spring Stableford

This year Hazel Grove was the venue for our first meeting of the year, the spring comp. The attendance was a little disappointing, but those who turned up had an enjoyable day. The stormy weather that was forecast, didn't arrive and we all stayed dry. The course itself was in excellent condition, well laid out and exceptionally presented. The competition was won by our vice captain Mr Kevin Baron (who,in his words, played like a golfing god) with 39 pts,the only player under par on the day. Second place went to Alan Mayho on CPO from 3rd placed Cliff Barrett, scoring 36 pts. Steve Newton claimed 4th with 34 pts. Well done Kev and thanks to all who supported the event.

Fourth - Keith Liddle net72

The Captains Trophy, our major event of the year, was played for at Howley Hall GC,Morley. It was the first visit here for the Bluebell and it certainley will not be the last.It must rank as one of the finest courses we have played, set in wonderful surroundings, excellently presented and the staff and members very welcoming. The winner on the day was Dave Parkinson with a score of 79-12-67. 2nd and 3rd were Norman Morris 86-17-69 and Frank Hauxwell 95-25-70 Frank also celebrated a hole in one on the par3 4th hole. Keith Liddle carded 85-13-72 to finish 4th. Only 3 players managed scores under par, showing the course is a tricky one to play, with accuracy a premium. Even our lowest handicapper of the day was well beaten by the course with 95-8-87,including taking 5 more shots than Frank on the 150 yd si 18, 4th. Just one of those days Cliff ! Congratulations to our winners and thanks for your support.

Ex Capts Niblick

WINNER - Alan Garside 36pts
Runner up - Keith Liddle 35pts
Third - Garry Baldwin 35pts
Fourth - Alec Reynolds 35pts

The Ex Captains Niblick was played for at Bingley St Ives golf club. The course proved to be a test of ability and course management with 2 distinct parts, parkland & heath, the latter part bringing a few potential good scores to a halt. Level par proved good enough to triumph, with Alan Garside the winner with 36pts. We then had 5 members on 35pts and after CPO, 2nd 3rd and 4th went to Keith Liddle,Garry Baldwin and Alec Reynolds respectively. Some good scores were posted yet again by all who played, the eventual winner Neil Murray beating Ged Skelly into 2nd place on CPO with 40 pts. 3rd place went to Alan Garside and Garry Baldwin finished 4th. Once again hosted the first of the years competitions, The welcome at Northenden by staff and members was (as expected) friendly and professional, the course itself was in excellent condition, well laid out and exceptionally presented. The weather this time tried to disrupt the day with rain showers and a constant blustery wind, however it didn't prevent some excellent scores being posted. The single stableford was won by Pat McGarry with 40pts(handicap alert !!) 2nd place went to Gareth Morris. who's round finished with a "blob" on the 18th,leaving him on 38pts. Steve Newton and Norman Morris finished 3rd and 4th respectively. Well done Pat and thanks to all who supported the event.

Charity News 2012

The weather during 2012 did it's best to upset our fund raising efforts this year, twice our main fund raising event, the traditional charity team competition was rained off. Not to be outdone, it was decided that our annual dinner & presentation evening would be cancelled (for the first time) and replaced with a charity fund raising evening. Due to the short notice it was a bit of a risk and worry to the organisers, but thanks to the support of members, sponsors (especially Adrian @ the Revelstoke) and the fantastic Soul Amigos the evening was an outstanding success with demand for tickets far out weighing those available.

Donations, the raffle and auction meant that this year a total of £2000.00 was raised for the captains chosen charity "The Christie at Oldham". On behalf of the society, thanks to all that supported the event. Such a success the 2013 capt has requested we do it again,we look forward to your continued support.

Donn Hayes Trophy

Northended G.C. Hosted the first of the trophy competitions of 2012,the Don Hayes Trophy. We were spoilt yet again by the weather as the day was one of glorious sunshine. The welcome at Northenden by staff and members at the clubhouse was friendly and professional, the course itself is an absolute gem, well laid out and exceptionally presented, definately one to add to the "must play" list and is already being requested by our members for next year . The competition was won by Jack Turner, beating Dave Parkinson into 2nd place, both playing much better than handicap putting themselves 5pts clear of the chasing pack. Tony Bloomfield and Pat McGarry finished 3rd & 4th respectively with scores that on many other occassions could have won the comp, unlucky !!! The day and course was enjoyed by everybody(,except Keith who thought it was a "goat track" but his card explains that remark) Bring on the next event, congratulations again to Jack.

SALE SPRING WARMER

Sale G.C. hosted our opening event of 2012 seeing the drive in of this years captain Joey Byrne. Despite heavy rain and closure a couple of days beforehand, the course was well presented and in great condition. The weather gods were smiling again as we played in warm sunshine all day. The winter layoff showed in some of the golf that was played but steady golf from Terry Brown and Kevin Baron saw them beat the field with 38pts. A card playoff separated 2nd and 3rd with Brian Window and Chris Bloomfield finishing ahead of Alan Mayoh and Frank Tyrer. Once again the Spring warmer was played how golf should be,in a relaxed and fun way,the serious stuff begins at the next event,The Don Hayes Memorial at Northenden. Congatulations again to the prize winners.

Bridlington - End of Season Tour

The end of season trip to Bridlington was yet again, well supported by members and guests. Our thanks to Adrian & the staff at the Revelstoke Hotel who were as friendly, helpful and professional as ever, with nothing being to much trouble (including arranging tow trucks , mechanics & taxis) The rooms were more than adequate, food excellent and evening entertainment every night. An excellent base for a golfing holiday. Half the group went a day early to enter the open event at Flamborough and had an enjoyable day's golf, as they all nearly won. The weather stayed dry for the whole trip, but high winds when playing Filey made it a round of crazy golf, but it was taken in great spirits by everybody. The courses played,Scarborough Southcliff,Filey,Hornsea & Bridlington Belvedere were all in excellent condition and staff and members made us welcome. Congratulations to all the competition winners especially to Alan Mayoh & Arthur Tattersall winners of the Nobby Trophy. In all the trip was a great success and enjoyed by everybody,if you want to know more, then pack your bag and book your place. As the saying goes .... What goes on tour !!!!!

Romiley - Captains Cup

Our thanks to Romiley G.C. For their support in hosting our final trophy event of the year, the Captains Cup.The course was in great condition despite the continuous rain. The staff throughout were professional and courteous leading to a very welcoming and pleasant day, finished with some excellent food prior to the presentation. Special thanks to Les,our host for the day,who welcomed us to the club and gave a few pointers to some of the areas to avoid on the course(duly ignored as balls found OB & hazards all afternoon),acted as starter and met us all on return to the clubhouse.Well done Les. The course and rain combined to make it a tough round of golf as nobody returned under par score. The winning team of the pairs competition at Blackley,Tommy Rabbett and Steve Newton carried that form into this event both carding scores of net 70. A score of 9 on the par 5 7th hole proved costly for Tommy, as he was beaten into 2nd place on cpo by eventual winner Steve Newton. A 74 was good enough to put Kev Baron in 3rd and a 77 gave Alan Garside 4th.

Congratulations to the 2011 Captains Cup winner - Steve Newton

Denton - Ex Captains Niblick

The weather was glorious sunshine for the Ex Captains Niblick at Denton G.C. The air around the 1st was full of the subtle smell of sunlotion(mainly applied to the top of heads) as the group prepared to tee it up. The course was in excellent condition and as always ,presented immaculately. The conditions and course set up, led to another enjoyable day out for the society and produced some high scoring golf all round.

There appears to be an assault on the silverware from the Morris family this year as Normans win at Worsley was followed up here by his son Gareth Morris, who shot a 2 over par gross of 73 of a 6 h/cap,to win with 40pts. In 2nd and 3rd places were long serving Bluebell members Ken Bolger and Alan Garside.

Congratulations to the 2011 winner of the Ex Captains Niblick - Gareth Morris.

Worsley - Don Hayes

In comparison to Pike Fold,It was a slightly diminished field that teed it up for the Don Hayes trophy at Worsley G.C. Never the less it was another enjoyable day.

When we met the weather was wet and grey but as the captain teed up, the clouds parted and the sun shone for the rest of the day. Once again the welcome at Worsley was exceptional, the staff as always professional and friendly. The course was in great condition and provided a tough test for everybody (as the scoring shows), however the days winner,Norman Morris managed a very creditable 39pts with Tommy Rabbett in 2nd and Pat McGarry 3rd both with 35 pts but with Tommy edging it on CPO.

Congratulations once again to Norman, winner Don Hayes Trophy 2011.

Spring Warmer

What a start to the Bluebell year.A total of 46 golfers assembled at Pike Fold for the initial event, and to witness our new captain for 2011, Pete Holden, perform the official drive in(well he waggled a club around for the camera) The weather was exceptional and the course was in great condition. Pike Fold is well laid out with water and bunkers strategically placed to offer a fair test of golf, although 3 pairs managed to amass 48 pts for their round.Congratulations go to our winners Cliff Barrett & Alan Garside (after CPO),in 2nd place were Geoff Cooke & Terry Brown and in 3rd Gary Dolan & Chris Thompson, who despite being beaten on cpo were laughing due to pocketing a few bob in the side bet.

Fingers crossed that the remaining events are as sucssessful.
